John Owen was born in Yorkshire and moved to Austria in 1974. Inspired equally by art and natural science, John qualified as a Member and Chartered Chemist of the Royal Society of Chemistry, working for many years in the international pharmaceutical industry.

It was in Austria, inspired by the light and peace of the unspoilt natural landscape in the Alps and Mühlviertel, that he felt increasingly drawn to watercolour painting.

In 1978, under Professor Claus Pack from the Vienna Art Academy, John was awarded a scholarship prize from the International Summer Academy of Painting in Salzburg (founded by Oskar Kokoschka in 1953 as the School of Vision). Meeting and painting with the innovative John Blockley and Moira Huntly in the 1980s had a major influence on his artistic development.

In 1993, John left industry to concentrate on painting full time. He built his own studio and attached a small gallery. Most of his watercolours are painted en plein air and can be found in private and corporate collections in Austria, Germany, Switzerland, England and South Africa. He has received commissions from the Province of Upper Austria and has painted for the governors of Upper Austria and Tyrol. He writes for ‘the artist’ magazine in Britain, gives painting tuition and is a founder member of the Rotary Club Freistadt and Paul Harris Fellow. John Owen is a regular exhibitor and committee member of the Brauhaus Galerie in the medieval town of Freistadt.
